A few weeks back, I had my first experience tasting turnips. These turnips were the common bulbous vegetable and had the colours purple and white. I have never been a fan of eating raw root vegetables, but I find that it's important to taste foods in their raw and cooked form.
My Expectations As for my expectations, I expected that turnips would be bitter and very tough.
Taste Test and General Overview As I cut a piece for myself and tasted the turnip for the first time, the first thing I noticed out of the 5 basic senses was that it was slightly sweet which completely threw me off guard. Not only that, but the turnip had some moisture in the flesh which made the turnip very refreshing. The turnip also gave off an earthy taste which I found to be quite unique. With the combinations of sweet, slightly refreshing, and earthiness, turnips reminded me of something similar to an unripe pear!
Final Thoughts As for my thoughts on turnips, I find my thoughts on turnips to be mixed. Turnips do have a sweetness which I am fond of, but I find the earthiness from the raw turnip slightly unappealing. I would like to eat turnips again, but definitely not just raw. I wish to see the potential of how turnips can be cooked and transformed into something even greater than just its raw form. Also, I wish to see what flavours and foods can merge well with the sweet yet earthy taste of the turnip.
